Sattari farmers called on Agriculture Minister Vijai Sardesai on Wednesday over the problem of wild animals. A delegation from Sattari, under Sattari Shetkari Sangatna, led by convener Ashok Joshi and other members including Prashant Desai and Rajesh Rane met Sardesai and apprised him of the problems caused by wild animals when they wander into fields and farms. Wild animals often stray into fields and damage crops, causing losses to the farmers.
“We met the agriculture minister and placed our problems before him. We explained to him how the crops are destroyed by wild boars, peacocks and monkeys and that farmers are completely helpless in this regard,” said Prashant Desai.
He said that the minister has told them that compensation for affected farmers would be released soon and also assured of looking into the problem and, if need be, even pay a visit to the area in Valpoi.
“Sardesai has assured us to look into the matter by consulting the forest officials and other concerned authorities. He has also told us that he will pursue the matter with the chief minister once he comes back,” Ashok Joshi stated over the phone.
It is learnt that farmers have also given references of all other states which have declared certain wild animals as vermin. Sattari farmers will be holding a series of meetings and decide future course of action after consulting all farmers for declaring certain wild animals as vermin.
