Chairperson of Sankhali Municipal Council (SMC) Dharmesh Saglani and three others were on Monday detained by Bicholim police for obstructing the demolition of an illegal section of a shop at Sankhali.
The four persons allegedly obstructed the demolition team led by Bicholim mamlatdar from demolishing the extended part of the shop.
According to a complaint registered by the Bicholim mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit, in pursuance of an order dated February 6, he along with a demolition team and police personnel reached Sankhali to demolish the extended part of the shop belonging to one Anand Verekar.
It is understood that during the demolition, the councillors and chairperson requested the authorities to defer the demolition. However, the request was turned down leading to tense situation even as many police personnel were present.
According to information given by police and the complaint filed by the mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit, during the demolition work, Saglani, councillor Damodar Ghadi, ex-councillor Riyaz Khan, shop owner Anand Verekar and others obstructed the demolition team.
“The aforesaid persons also threatened and verbally abused the mamlatdar and manhandled the police personnel,” the compliant states.
However, SMC chairperson Saglani said that they only requested the officials to defer the demolition as every one has right to approach higher court and refuted claims that they abused anyone.
Based on the complaint, the police first detained the four persons including Saglani and in the evening an FIR was registered. Later they were released on bail. PI Sanjay Dalvi is investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, local MLA Pramod Sawant said that he is in no way connected to the issue.
