Salgaocar FC win Goa crown; qualify for final round

CAMPAL: Salgaocar FC defeated Sporting Clube de Goa 2-0 in their penultimate game of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) Sub Junior League to top the table – with a game yet to play – at Don Bosco ground on Tuesday.

Salgaocar FC are on fifteen points , FC Goa is second with twelve points ,Dempo Sports Club  is third with eleven points, Sporting Clube de Goa is on nine points from eight games and Churchill Brothers is yet to open their account with  a game in hand.

Winners Salgaocar FC plays Dempo Sports Club in the last round match whilst FC Goa plays bottom placed Churchill Brothers. Two teams from Goa qualify for the final round.

Aware that a point would win them the crown, Salgaocar FC started with earnest and never gave Sporting Clube de Goa a simmer of success. They mounted pressure from the start and could have scored in the 10th minute had Joean Simoes been on target from the top of the box.

Salgaocar FC broke the Sporting resistance in the 14th minute through Salvador Gama. Salvador on getting the ball on top of the sporting box, darted in past two defenders and on seeing an advancing Sporting keeper aman , lobbed it over him for the first goal of the evening.

Salgaocar FC displayed more variety in attack and stability in defense, in the first twenty minutes, whilst the Sporting Clube de Goa lads resorted to long balls, opting to trap Salgaocar FC unawares.

Sporting Clube De Goa’s only chance in the first half was created by Diwakar Chaudhary whose, not too powerful shot, was easily collected by Salgaocar keeper Akash Singh.

The winners trooped for the break leading by a goal.

Salgaocar continued their domination in the second half. They kept pressing back the Sporting players and in the 42nd minute Rui Noronha saw his low ground shot go past the side bar.

The sporting resistance crumbles in the 53rd minute when Ashnoy Gomes pleased the eyes of those present with a neat volley that gave sporting keeper Aman no chance.

Sporting’s Ashwin Da Cost received his second yellow card in the 53rd minute to leave his team a man down.

With a one man advantage, Salgaocar FC tried to score more. However, Sporting goalkeeper Aman proved hard to beat till the final hooter.
