Striker Steflon D’Costa’s 85th minute goal enabled Salgaocar FC (juniors) register a solitary-goal win against Goa Police Sports Club in the GFA First Division Football League match played at Cansaulim grounds on Monday.
The all-important goal for the winners came off following Phezor Gomes’ good shot from inside the box after a brilliant move on the left flank.
Fhezor on receiving the ball sped past two rival defenders and unleashed an angular shot which Goa Police keeper Niklesh Naik parried, but the ball kept on rolling as Steflon pushed the ball into the nylons.
Salgaocar FC, who controlled the second half proceedings, almost made the Goa Police dance to their tunes and the frustrated policemen resorted to some rough play in the second session, as they charged straight into the Salgaocar strikers, preferring to go for the man rather than the ball in the last quarter of the match.
Salgacoar could have scored three sure goals in the last quarter of the match, but the defence of Goa Police dealt tackled the youthful Salgacoar strikers with hard tackles, bringing them down on the edge of the box. Phezor Gomes, Viven De Souza and Steflon who played in the striking line for Salgaocar FC created a flurry of raids and were the targets of the rough Goa Police defenders who were brought down on the edge of the box, before they could pull the trigger.
Goa Police only managed a few wayward moves which could not spell much danger to the Salgaocar FC’s defensive fort ably managed by Aswhwin Fernandes, Robert Noronha, Shawn Pereira and Ronaldo Pereira. Their goalkeeper Utkarsh Deshmukh almost had a holiday under the bar even though he looked alert and agile all through.
Goa Police keeper Niklesh Naik had a harrowing time under the bar and the keeper proved to be a good pair of hands when Salgaocar’s youthful strikers unleashed their shots at him.
Goa Police defence led by Vishal Narvenkar was kept busy for most part of the play and the team was in the defensive for major part of the proceedings surviving some anxious moments when the young Salgaocar FC team came
