Sahni to be new VC of Goa University

Prof Varun Sahni from the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) will be the next Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the Goa University. He will take over on October 25 later this year, after current Vice-Chancellor Dr Satish Shetye completes his tenure.

Sources said that the Chancellor of Goa University and Governor Dr Mridula Sinha appointed Prof Sahni after the search committee headed by renowned scientist Dr Raghunath Mashelkar with Prof Balvant Jani “Tirth” and Ashank Desai as members, recommended the name.

A former reader in Latin American Politics at Goa University, Prof Sahni served as the tenth Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jammu from December 2008 to January 2012.
He is currently a professor in International Politics at JNU and chairperson of the Centre for International Politics, Organisation and Disarmament (CIPOD). He edits South Asian Survey, an international peer review journal of repute, speaks regularly at the National Defence College (NDC), New Delhi and has been a jury member of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding.

An Inlaks Scholar, Prof Sahni wrote his doctoral dissertation on the political role of the Argentine Navy at the University of Oxford in 1991. Before joining the JNU faculty in 1995, he was junior research fellow in politics and junior dean at Lincoln College, Oxford and resident fellow of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, New Delhi.
