Down by a goal early into the match, Rossman Cruz SC, Nagoa-Verna came back strongly to beat Sao Jose de Areal 3-1 and enter the semifinals of Late Joao Francisco/Luiza Pacheco Cup football tournament played at panchayat grounds, Betalbatim on Friday.
Starting the match on a promising note, Sao Jose de Areal shot into the lead by a goal from attacking medio Christo Maura who, after receiving a neat pass from Oswald Fernandes, let go an angular shot that stunned Rossman Cruz keeper C
Undeterred by the early setback, Rossman Cruz stitched some good moves with their midfield gelling well and spreading the ball well on both the flanks. They could have levelled the score in the 20th minute but a powerful shot taken by Beniston Barreto missed the mark narrowly.
Rossman Cruz finally succeeded in restoring the parity when striker Christo D’Melo ran solo after eluding the entire Sao Jose de Areal defence, and on entering the box sent a scorching shot that had no answer from Sao Jose de Areal keeper Joseph Monteiro.
Both the teams then had some tries at each other’s goal, but the goalkeepers at either end proved to have good pair of hands. While Areal keeper Joseph Monteiro well collected two shots, Rossman Cruz keeper, just a minute before the breather, dived to his full length to clear the ball to safety.
The second session saw Rossman Cruz having a complete grasp on the match as it was once again Christo Rego who went solo and bulged the nets in the 55th minute to complete his brace.
The defence of Rossman Cruz stood firm when the Areal strikers tried to penetrate inside the box. Clive Coelho and Remedios Vaz remain rock-solid to quell all the moves made by the Areal strikers as they held their fort in the second session. And with ten minutes remaining for the final hooter, Rossman Cruz scored their third goal through Beniston Barreto whose stiff grounder gave no chance at all to the Areal keeper.
