Residents from Nerul peeved as garbage washes ashore

NERUL: The garbage menace at Coco beach, Nerul has reached an alarming rate making it unsuitable for traditional fishing activities. According to Nerul villagers, the garbage has washed ashore over the past few days.

Locals say that garbage has been thrown into the Coco beach by unknown persons resulting in the waste being washed ashore. They said that the garbage falls on the road and poses a risk to two-wheeler riders.

The locals also complained that people come during the night and party around the beach. They throw beer bottles into the sea which gets washed ashore.

Fishermen at Coco beach say that neither the panchayat nor the local MLA is least bothered to get the beach cleaned. Tourism related operators on the beach are complaining that the beach has been neglected by the authorities.

A panch member Caitan from Dandadi ward said that the garbage is washed ashore during the monsoon. Tourists who go on dolphin trips from the Sinquerim jetty throw their garbage into the sea which gets washed ashore. He said that the fishermen are suffering as garbage gets caught in the fishing nets.

Nerul sarpanch Piedade Almeida said that it is the job of the tourism department to clean the beach as the panchayat has no funds. Almeida said that he will be taking up the issue with the local MLA.

Minister for Housing Jayesh Salgaonkar said that the government has big plans for the beautification of Coco beach, namely to construct toilets, changing rooms, and a highmast, besides benches for senior citizens. He said the beach will be cleaned before the start of the tourist season.

Nerul communidade president Eric Godinho said that the government needs to take an NOC from the communidade for beautification of the beach. He further said that since the matter is in court between a tenant and the communidade, the tourism department will not be given NOC to carry out any works on the beach.
