Tourists who visited Calangute on Wednesday were badly affected as most of the tourist taxis went off the road and the rates of rent-a-bike and rent-a-car services were increased in the beach belt.
Almost 90 per cent of tourist taxis were off the road, the private buses which used to ply on different routes also went off the road, the KTC buses were seen in Calangute ferrying passengers and tourists. Two KTC buses were put in operation to ferry tourists from the hotels to the airport with more than 100 tourists availing the benefit. Also, tourist buses of travel agencies were ferrying tourists to their destinations. However, all business establishments were open.
Overall the situation in the beach belt was peaceful. Usual rate of rent-a-bike is Rs 300 but it went up to Rs 500 and rent-a-car rate on normal days is Rs 1,200 but due to strike, it went up to Rs 1,500.
Vinayak Nanoskar, general secretary of North Goa Taxi Owners Association said that they had extended support to the bandh as some government polices have affected their business in a big way.
