Remembering yesteryear’s tiatrists through Alexyz caricatures

To appreciate tiatrists of yesteryears for keeping Goa’s Konkani identity alive, artist and cartoonist Alexyz exhibited caricatures of 100 tiatrists at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. The exhibition organised by Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG), Department of Art and Culture in collaboration with Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, was inaugurated by chairman of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, Prashant Naik on June 29.

Referring to tiatrists as ‘treasures’ Prashant highlighted that Goans does not know much about their personal lives, and this series of caricatures brings to fore some behind the scenes moments too.

“In the older times, theatre was popular in West Bengal, Goa and Maharashtra. Goan tiatr shows would earlier be held only on Saturdays and Sundays. Today, on the other hand, the number of dramas produced in Bengal and Maharashtra cannot beat the rising number of tiatr production in Goa. Tiatr has reached an international level,” he added appreciating TAG for putting together this show.

Alexyz mentioned that he had approached TAG to inform about his idea of drawing 125 caricatures of tiatrists to celebrate the 125 years of tiatr. TAG loved the idea and they selected 100 late tiatrists for the caricatures.  “We have also included those tiatrists who have died recently.”

Chairman of 125th Anniversary of Tiatr Celebration Committee, Tomazinho Cardozo further said that though they have tried to incorporate as many names as possible, a few tiatrists have been missed out. “It is true that we have missed quite a number of tiatrists who are no more but I will make sure that we don’t miss out on any other tiatrists when we put up such shows next time,” he said.

President of TAG Agostinho Temudo, vice-president of TAG William Fernandes, member secretary of TAG Cezar D’Mello and vice-chairman of Ravindra Bhavan, Margao Saiesh Panandikar were present on the occasion.
