Scoring in each half of play through medio Razia Pereira and Clency Miranda, Regina Martyrum High School, Assolna registered a well deserved 2-0 win over Rosary Higher Secondary School, Navelim to emerge ‘champions’ of Salcete Zone in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup U-17 for girls played at Nehru stadium, Fatorda on Saturday.
Dominating the play right from the start, in both the sessions of play, Regina Martyrum dominated the field with complete authority, allowing little room for the Rosary strikers to endeavour inside their box.
So complete was the dominance of Regina Martyrum, against their well known side, that Rosary Higher Secondary could hardly have a clear look at their goal. Had Regina Martyrum taken all their chances, they could have been winners with a much bigger margin.
In the first half, Regina Martyrum could have been three goals up but that was not to be as their strikers hit the ball out from very close, even when the Rosary Higher Secondary School keeper Poojari Pooja was out of position.
Regina Martyrum went into the lead through a free kick after a rival defender handled the ball on the top of the left side box. Attacking medio Razia Pereira who stepped up, unleashed a powerful shot that crashed to the far corner of the nets. The goal came off in the 16th minute.
Goaded by the success, Regina Martyrum attacked with added venom thereafter, but twice their good tries were off the mark.
Sensing trouble from the marauding Regina Martyrum strikers, Rosary Higher Secondary School replaced their keeper, bringing in Mayflower Colaso with Poojari going to the benches. Still,there was no respite in Regina Martyrum’s attack and a goal looked imminent at any time. Mayflower, the Rosary keeper had to be vigilant all the while as their defence began to crack under pressure constantly.
After penetrating forays, Regina Martyrum buttressed their lead through central midfielder Clency Miranda who had a great game along with the other medios like Yukthi Patil, Daisy Crasto and Suveda Kokate.
Regina’s speedy striker Ianire Fernandes raced down the flank on receiving a neat pass from substitute defender Isha Patel and on entering the box, passed the ball to Clency Miranda whose stiff grounder went past Rosary’s substitute keeper Mayflower Colaso. The goal came just seven minutes from the final hooter.
Regina Martyrum High School keeper Pritty Kessekar had a holiday under the bar on Saturday as nothing much came to her from the rival side.
Regina Martyrum, having been crowned as the Salcete Zone champions, have now qualified for District Level competition of this tournament.
