Rich tributes were paid to the former chief minister Manohar Parrikar and ex-defence minister at a condolence meet organised by Vasco BJP mandal in Vasco on Saturday.

MLA Carlos Almeida recalled the bold step taken by Parrikar to clear the ‘dark spot’, the infamous red-light area of Baina beach. He also recalled the order of Rs 35,000 crore issued by the defence ministry to the Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) for construction of advanced minesweepers or mine counter-measure vessels (MCMV) to meet the requirement of the world’s fifth-largest navy which was possible due to the initiative of Parrikar. Almeida expressed his grief over the demise of Parrikar who was a leader of the masses.

Former minister for forest and environment Rajendra Arlekar said that “Parrikar was an intellectual person. He gave his life to the people. He is the tallest leader Goa has ever seen.” He hailed Parrikar as a real ‘Vikas Purush’ of Goa. “The other name for development was Parrikar,” he maintained.

Ex-Vasco MLA Jose Philip D’Souza said Parrikar was a born leader and never compromised on his decisions. “Parrikar will be remembered forever by the people for his good work, leadership and policies,” D’Souza stated.

Former chairperson of Mormugao Municipal Council Deepak Naik said that he entered politics under the leadership of Parrikar. “Atal Setu, the third bridge over river Mandovi, was a brain child of Parrikar”, he said.

Vasco BJP president Rajendra Dicholkar spoke about the welfare schemes launched by Parrikar for the benefit of Goans. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has described Parrikar as a diamond due to his leadership qualities,” Dicholkar said.

Prominent lawyer from Vasco Rajiv Dhavlikar described Parrikar as a visionary leader under whose leadership Goa set off on transformation path. “Parrikar launched various schemes and even uplifted various sectors like education, health, agriculture. The large-scale infrastructure development which is seen today in the state is due to Parrikar’s efforts,” stated Dhavlikar. The death of Parrikar has left a void in the state, he said.

Kerala Cultural Association president T Ravishankar said that “passing away of Parrikar is a great loss to the state. He had a vision for Goa. He was associated with Keralites and even with Ayyappa seva samithi. He worked for Goa and Goans till his last breath.”

A representative of Gaur Yuva Sena Shivaji Chawhan said that Parrikar never discriminated among communities. Veteran Soldiers Welfare Association Goa vice president Anil Kumar Rai said “Parrikar will be remembered for surgical strike and even for implementing the long-awaited demand of soldiers for one-rank-one-pension,” said Rai.

Former president of Goa Barge Owners Association Atul Jadhav, Goa Fishing Boat Owners Association general secretary Sydney Furtado also expressed their sentiments.
