Man of Words

What made you take up to compeering?
My father was in the Lions Club and their youth wing was called Leo. By chance or by design, I was called upon one day to compeer for an event of theirs.

I was fifteen then. That was my first break and then on I went from strength to strength and turned professional in 1996.  My other break was when Joseph Mascarenhas from Chandor invited me to host the Royal Embassy Night. Then, in 1995, the food and cultural festival gave me a huge exposure. Later I also tried my hand as a RJ with AIR, HMV FM, and Radio Midday.
Name some of your big events.
I have hosted big shows in India as well as abroad. The May Queen Ball at Dubai stands out as one of my big shows abroad. In India, I have hosted shows like Big B at the inauguration of Silver Star this year, apart from hosting a number of other big names. For more than 10 years, I have hosted the Navy Ball and in 2001; I nostalgically recall compeering a folk dance programme for the President of India at the Raj Bhavan. Some of the other events I hosted include the opening of the new International Terminal at Dabolim airport and the opening of the International Film Festival of India.
Do you compeer at weddings to, and if it is a Catholic wedding what are the challenges you face?
Yes, I do a lot of compeering for weddings too. Although I may have done a few North Indian weddings, my forte is Catholic weddings and has been so for 10 years now. Coming to your question as to how I manage to get the Catholic customs and traditions right, I would say that it was initially difficult, but good friends helped me out and today I am confident.
How much of groundwork is required before hosting an event?
For weddings or corporate events, I always meet up with the concerned party before the event. One needs to probe and find out as to what the crowd will be like, their likes, and finally go through the flow of events. Weddings involve emotions and care has to be taken not to aggrieve anyone.
