Our Lady of Rosary High School, Fatorda emerged champions in the State U-14 Subroto Mukherjee Football for boys as they overcame a spirited St Joseph High School, Calangute by a solitary goal in the finals played at SAG ground at Utorda on Tuesday.

Attacking medio Yash Pawar’s strike just two minutes before the final hooter proved to be the match winner for the Fatorda school as it helped them clinch the title and book their ticket to Delhi.

Our Lady of Rosary HS played an attacking game in the first half and began raiding the rival citadel right from the start. They however could not break the deadlock as almost the entire team of St Joseph HS was seen falling back to defend their fort.

On crossing over, St Joseph HS entered the field with renewed ideas and matched their rivals from Fatorda stroke for stroke. However their resilience lived shortly, as midway into the second session the Fatorda school once again started their onslaught.

Phillip J Coutinho, the goalkeeper of St Joseph’s HS, proved to be a safe pair of hands as he thwarted some powerful shots from rival strikers Guarav Singh and Yash Pawar in the first half, and remained firm under the bar in the second half as well until the last two finals minutes of the game when the Fatorda school scored the match winner following a flag kick.

Our Lady of Rosary defender Rio Gomes floated the flag kick right at the feet of striker Yash Pawar who stood across the mouth of the rival goal in the six-yard box. Yash controlled the ball well and then unleashed a flying shot that evaded the outstretched hands of St Joseph’s keeper and crashed to the far end of the nets.

St Joseph’s HS overall played a good game. They did have couple of chances on counter forays, which however fizzled out due to resolute defence by Rosary HS.
