Pakistan’s Double Face

IT is not hard to tell why a three-judge bench of the Pakistan Supreme Court has dismissed Pakistan government appeals against the Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief, Hafiz Saeed’s release.

The evidence presented by the government is not very strong. The evidence has large holes. The Pakistan government has done it in spite of the world’s attention to the case owing to Saeed being named by India as one of the masterminds of the Mumbai terror attack. The US and European nations have been paying special attention to the Saeed case, because the victims of the Mumbai terror attack included their nationals; public opinion in these countries is sensitive to the way the case is progressing. India’s deep disappointment over the dismissal of appeals has been conveyed by foreign secretary, Ms Nirupama Rao. But there was no less deep concern in the rest of the world over Pakistan’s double-face: one fostering terrorism, another ‘fighting’ it.
