Does the arrival of Mr Manohar Parrikar as Chief Minister signal a solution to Margao’s traffic woes? It does inspire hope, but a solution seems more in the distant future.
Of course the promise of additional personnel to man the traffic cell is a start as is the plan to create additional parking space within the city. The old bus stand, old fish market and pick-up stand have been identified as areas for parking and one hopes multi-parking facilities will eventually come up in the city. Plans for the same have been stuck in the pipeline for the last seven or eight years with the previous Congress government showing no inclination to bring them to fruition. But in the long run vehicle owners and governments must realise that parking space will never be enough and a long-term solution with public transport as its core will have to be worked out.
