Preserve Identity of Khel Tiatrs
CONGRATULATIONS to the Kala Academy for successfully organising the just-concluded ‘Khel Tiatr Festival - 2010’. It will go a long way in promoting Khel Tiatrs of yesteryears and remembering the Gurus of original Khel Tiatrs. However, it was disappointing to see that the participating writers /directors of Tiatrs lost the sense of a Khel Tiatr and its format.
I suggest the Kala Academy to appoint a committee to verify the originality of participating groups, whether it is originally a Khel Tiatr or Tiatr. It is disheartening to see the shows, originally written and released as Tiatrs, performed throughout Goa, have been modified and given a new look of Khel Tiatr. It’s very simple to convert ‘Tiatr’ into ‘Khel Tiatr’, just debit Kantarams and credit side shows, and to make it a ‘Tiatr’, just credit Kantarams. Are these participating troupes really interested in preserving the culture of ‘Khel Tiatr’ and respect the sentiments of Khel Tiatr Gurus or just add one more date to their chart by keeping monetary assistance in mind? One shouldn’t make ‘Khichddi’ of Tiatr / Khel Tiatr and fool the audience.

Ban Illegal Hawkers
THE South Goa district magistrate has recently issued a notification banning parking of handcarts and erecting of stalls by hawkers of eatables, fruit vendors, furniture mart, etc within a radius of 50 metres from all road junctions and traffic islands. Parking of vehicles within a radius of 50 metres is banned and buses will not be allowed to stop to take passengers within 25 metres from a road intersection. This ban should be implemented in letter and in spirit as illegal stalls have been mushrooming. The ban could also be introduced in North Goa as there is obstruction to smooth flow of vehicles in Panaji, Mapusa and other places.

Disregard for Judiciary
IN India, misuse of power by those in the legislature and the executive are common. In this turbulent backdrop, the judiciary by-and-large had maintained its dignity over all these years and had remained unscathed from such misdemeanours. Many of us have special regard and respect for the judges, for the simple reason that they are the epitomes of justice delivery system. I still remember a lesson that we had during our school days in Hindi, wherein it was beautifully stressed that God speaks from the mouth of a judge. It is sad to see that during the recent past many aspersions have been cast on the attitude of some judges. The worst is the latest revelation made through the CBI probe before the Supreme Court that six district judges from Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, some of whom later became the judges of the high court, were instrumental in fraudulently withdrawing crores of rupees from the PF account of class III and IV employees and using the same for personal needs.

Grooming Sportspersons in State
MOST of the parish schools in Goa take keen interest in nurturing footballers by providing grounds and appointing coaches. However, the government is found wanting on many counts. Besides football, sports like hockey, cricket and athletics must also be encouraged. Sports will also go a long way in overall development of individuals.
