Educating Kids

THE UNESCO document, ‘Learning: the Treasure Within’, known as Delors Report (1996), talks of total education and has provided a vision for the twenty-first century education including pre-primary curriculum.

The new "Guide to the Pre-primary Curriculum (2006)", prepared by the Curriculum Development Council Committee on Early Childhood Education emphasises that early childhood education lays the foundation for life-long learning and whole person development. Though this was implemented in some schools in 2007 it is yet to acquire a uniform character. It is encouraging that the Goa government has decided to implement uniform curriculum in all pre-primary schools in Goa from the academic year 2011-12 and the department of education has already given it the green signal. But the department has to ensure that a curriculum should not turn the kids into a machine. Pre-primary curriculum should be formulated in conformity to the basic principles of "children’s development" and "children’s learning". Children’s learning interests, needs and abilities should also be taken into consideration. To make it effective the government must stop mushrooming of the pre-primary schools. At present a significant number of such schools are run from the drawing rooms without adhering to the basic norms. Besides, the department should also ensure that the teachers are well trained. He or she should allow the children to develop their multiple intelligences through play and activities. Instead of being guided by certain rules, emphasis should on developing child’s basic skill, his basic concept and developing positive values and attitude.
