The coastal security police have 12 interceptor boats at their disposal of which three are five tonne vessels while six other are 12 tonne boats
PANAJI: The coastal security force of the state police has been playing vital role in ensuring that not only the coastal area of Goa is safe but also in gathering intelligence of movement of all vessels and people on board them so as to prevent any eventuality.
The coastal security force personnel in north Goa function from Siolim coastal security police station and have to patrol all the areas in the north Goa district using interceptor boats at their disposal from Aguada to Keri-Tiracol (the northernmost part of the state).
Though the Siolim coastal security police station is facing acute shortage of the personnel, its available staff under the leadership of police inspector, Mr Anthony Monserrate, managed to check a large number of fishing vessels operating in the area as well as all other crafts passing within its jurisdiction of 5 nautical miles from the shore.
The coastal police personnel also kept round the clock vigil along the coast during the recently concluded Christmas and New Year celebrations to ensure safety of Goans and tourists visiting the state by keeping a vigil on all the movements at sea and checking all the sea crafts, fishing trawlers along with their crew.
The coastal security police have 12 interceptor boats at their disposal of which three are five tonne vessels while six other are 12 tonne boats. The boats have been put at the disposal of all the costal security police station.
Besides, Siolim (which has control over the area from Aguada to Keri-Tiracol in Pernem), the other two costal security police stations are located at Mormugao Harbour (for the central zone) that extends from the Raj Bhavan to Benaulim and one at Betul that looks after the southern zone that extends from Benaulim to Talpona-Polem in Canacona taluka.
The vigil maintained by the coastal security force did not yield anything suspicious but a dead body on the outer side of Grande Island.
It also rescued four fishermen whose canoe was damaged by an unknown vessel while they were sleeping after having cast the net at sea, but the body of owner of the canoe could not be found.
The superintendent of police in-charge of the coastal police, Mr Allen D’Sa, said that his personnel also gather intelligence from fishermen and the lifeguards of Surf Life Saving Goa to prevent any intrusion from sea into the state.
Mr D’Sa also said that staff has also been posted at all fishing jetties to gather information about movement at sea from the crew of fishing vessels.
The superintendent of police in-charge of the coastal police also stated that four more coastal police stations would be set up in the state in the second phase of strengthening the coastal security and that two jetties would also be built.
