VELIM: The electricity department’s proposal to replace existing overhead lines and electricity poles in six villages in Velim constituency is yet to take off after tenders floated by the government failed to evoke any response. The work was expected to commence early January at a cost of Rs 6 crore.
Under the proposal, villages of Dramapur-Sirlim, Sarzora, Chinchinim, Assolna, Velim and Ambelim were to be taken in the firstphase while the department had prepared an estimate of Rs 50 lakh for the village of Sao Jose de Areal which was to be taken in the second phase. Two attempts were made to tender the replacement of electricity overhead lines and poles which failed to evoke any response from contractors amidst widespread resentment from villagers over erratic power supply.
The project has been sanctioned under the renovation and improvement scheme (RMI) and all lines will be replaced. Velim MLA, Benjamin Silva was not available for comment as several attempts to contact him had turned futile.
The situation is no different in Sirlim-Dramapur with public complaining of frequent power breakdowns and overhead lines being dangerously low. The issue was raised at the gram sabha for rectification, however the matter failed to yield any results. In Chinchinim too, the residents have been complaining of frequent power breakdowns.
Says Chinchinim sarpanch, Santos Rebello, there are atleast 10-15 power disruptions in a single day in Chinchinim and the department is inefficient in handling power breakdowns. This is a problem that has been going on for years and the issue has not been addressed by the authorities, he said. NT
