Woman gets 5-year term for culpable homicide

MARGAO: The additional district and sessions judge, South Goa, Mr P V Kamat on Tuesday sentenced Lalita Bir Bhadur, 36, from Nepal, to under go five years simple imprisonment and to pay a fine of Rs 2000 in default or else to undergo one month simple imprisonment.

She has been convicted under Section 304 (i) for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
It may be recalled that one Ms Madvhi was admitted in a private hospital and that on April 24, 2008 the accused Lalita, went to the hospital where she got into an argument with her and then stabbed her with a knife causing serious injuries to her.  The accused then in a fit of anger also made an attempt to kill herself with the same knife.
The Vasco police after registering the offence under Sections 302 and 309 had arrested the accused and charge-sheeted the case.
In all, 25 witnesses in support of the case including the investigating police officer, police inspectors, Mr Harish Madkaiker, Mr Uttam Raut Dessai and PSI, Mr Dalvi were examined. The public prosecutor, Mr Promod Hede represented the state.
