Vandalism at Cuncolim; one arrested

MARGAO: Another incident of vandalism, this time at Savorcatto in Cuncolim was reported on Sunday night where a cross and a window glass of the St Anthony’s church were found broken. The cross is said to be located along the roadside while the church is situated around a kilometre away from this site.

On being informed about the incident, a police team headed by the assistant sub-inspector Mr Ramakhant Dessai (ASI) under the supervision of the police inspector Mr Nelson Albuquerque rushed to the site and conducted enquiries. A dog squad was also pressed into service.

Later they arrested Fenny Britto, who is said to be deaf and dumb on suspicion after he was spotted by a local resident while allegedly breaking the window glass of the church. After interrogation he is learnt to have confessed to the offence, police informed.

Police have registered the offence under Sections 295, 295A, 153 and 447 of Indian Penal Code based on a complaint lodged by Mr Agusto Rebello.

The South Goa superintendent of police, Mr Allan D’Sa, sub-divisional police officer Mr Umesh Gaunker, PI, Mr Nelson Albuquerque and other officers visited the site and took stock of the situation.

It is learn that the alleged accused will be taken to Sanjay school to seek more details from him as police could not talk to him.

Police said that some blood stains were found at the site and scientific expert opinion is being sought in this regard. Assistant sub-inspector Mr Ramakhant Dessai (ASI) is investigating the case.

Meanwhile, the Maina Curtorim police during last two days have recorded the statements of over 25 persons including some committee members in connection with the investigations of the Our Lady of Bethlehem church incident.

The police on Monday said that a team was camping at Chandor in connection with the investigations of the said case and the team had also visited some houses and collected information about the damaged items. Police said that so far they have not collected any vital clue in this regard.
