Quepem civic body to get garbage treatment plant

QUEPEM: The sanction of Rs 1.3 crore for a garbage treatment plant project has seen the Quepem municipal council (QMC) heave a sigh of relief.

The project will consist of a land fill site, garbage treatment plant, compound wall and infrastructure. The QMC has already floated two tenders for the landfill site of Rs 15 lakh and Rs 35 lakh for infrastructure. They have been sent for acceptance.

As per the directives of the High Court every municipality should have a garbage treatment plant and the licenses for multi-dwelling license of seven municipalities were stopped as they do not comply with the above guidelines. QMC was one of the seven municipalities.

Eight months back the QMC had acquired 21,000 sq m of land at Peddamoll-Sirvoi at Quepem for a garbage treatment plant. This area got embroiled into a jurisdictional dispute between the Xeldem panchayat and QMC as this area comes under the jurisdiction of Xeldem panchayat. But, fortunately, it was amicably resolved.

The QMC chairperson, Ms Lydia stated that this project was "very close to her heart" and that at present the work of compound wall, a project of Rs 22 lakh is in progress, with the work of the land fill site to commence soon.

On completion of all construction formalities this will be the second garbage treatment unit in the state.

She informed that this plant will have a capacity of 5 metric tones of garbage per day. Earlier during the press briefing called by the chairperson, councillor, Mr Raul Pereira informed that they have received a grant of Rs 27 lakh for the compound wall and the work has commenced. He stated that on completion of this plant all garbage problems will be solved and that it will prove that we have solved the garbage problems of Quepem.

Junior engineer Mr Deepak Desai informed that four composting units are being constructed. Of which one is near the Quepem cemetery, two are at Condy and one is at Shirvoi. He said that the major part of the garbage is treated at these units and the compost fertiliser is being kept for sale in the QMC which people can buy.
