Ponda CO files complaint against deceased cashier

PONDA: In a rare case, a complaint of misappropriation of funds has been filed with the Ponda police, against a government official, who died two years ago.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP), Mr Serafin Dias informed on Thursday that the chief officer, Mr Jayant Tari of the Ponda Municipal Council (PMC) filed a police complaint against the former cashier, late M N Ali of PMC for allegedly misappropriating of PMC funds to a tune of over Rs 40 lakh.
Quoting the complainant, Mr Dias informed that the incident occurred in the year 2006 to 2008 -- two years before Ali died. PMC sources said Ali died on-duty of heart attack on April 2, 2008. When contacted, Mr Tari confirmed that he has complained to the police on behalf of PMC about the misappropriation of funds.
“I was compelled to file the complaint after the auditors in their last year report, pointed the misappropriation of fund of Rs 40.78 lakh from the PMC coffer and held the cashier responsible,” Mr Tari informed this reporter.
When enquired about almost two years delay in filing the police complaint, Mr Tari said that soon after the auditors’ observations of shortage of funds and filed remarks, “we conducted the internal verifications which took almost 6 months. And, after convinced with the verifications that Ali is solely responsible for it, a police complaint was filed against him at the Ponda Police station,” Mr Tari added.
“There is absolutely no problem to register the complaint against the dead,” cleared Mr Dias. Incidentally, this is first such case booked at Ponda though similar cases have been booked at other police stations.
