PANAJI: The state’s capital city has been a witness to around 20 theft incidents that have been reported at the Panaji police station between the period from March 1, 2010 to April 7, 2010.
Out of these thefts, six instances have been of shop burglaries that occurred in a single night at Alfran building near Don Bosco School and at other areas in the city. Some unknown persons decamped with cash and valuables worth Rs 1.30 lakh after gaining entry into the shops by bending shutters in the Alfran building. Various localities in the capital city including posh colonies and even residences of cops have been targeted by the miscreants. Thieves have pounced upon everything from water meters to cash and gold ornaments, mobile handsets to laptops and even 2-wheelers to 4-wheelers.
A car, three scooters and 4 motorcycles were stolen from public parking places in the city. Among the stolen two-wheelers was a brand new Yamaha motorcycle worth Rs 65,000 belonging to one Minguel D’Souza.
Besides this, house breaking incidents by maid servants and unknown persons in separate cases were also reported. The amount of the stolen property including car, 2-wheelers, gold ornaments, cellphones besides other valuables is estimated to be around Rs 7.50 lakh.
In one of the prominent robberies that occurred, a female took up a maid’s job at one Mr Paul D’Souza’s residence at Dona Paula and decamped with gold ornaments but she was later apprehended and gold recovered. In another case of theft a no objection certificate, which was produced before the civil cum sub registrar at the time of registration of sale deed, was stolen from the Sub Registrar’s office at Panaji and is yet to be recovered.
