One killed in Gujarat riot

AHMEDABAD: A 52-year-old man, injured during clashes between two communities in Shahpur died on Wednesday, while three others were wounded in fresh violence in the area, the police said.

The deceased Vijay Datania had sustained injuries in the head during stone pelting by two groups in Nagoriwad lane of Shahpur area on Tuesday, they said, adding, a few others were also injured during the clashes.
In the clashes which broke out on Wednesday, a man was injured after being attacked by a mob near R C Technical School, the police said, adding that he was rescued by the police patrol in the area and taken to hospital.
In another incident, two men were allegedly stabbed with a sharp weapon near Mirzapur rural court in the area, they said.
“There were some sporadic incidents of violence in Shahpur today. Some people were injured and have been taken to hospital,” the assistant commissioner of police, Mr N N Gohil told PTI.
Mr Gohil also confirmed the stabbing incident where two persons were injured. “The mobs of the two groups were dispersed by the police and the situation was brought under control,” he said.
According to the police, a company of the State Reserve Police has been deployed in the area and night patrolling has also been increased.
Situation has been tense in Shahpur since Monday when the first incident of violence occurred.
On Tuesday, members of two groups pelted stones and also torched some vehicles in Shahpur, which falls in the communally sensitive old city area.
The Shahpur MLA, Mr Gyasuddin Sheikh appealed the people not to believe in rumours and restrain themselves from indulging in violence.
