Members urged to send proposals to committee

PANAJI: The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat has said that decision on naming institutions after the first chief minister of Goa, Dayanand Bandodkar, would be taken by the centenary celebrations committee and urged the members of the assembly to send the proposals for naming the institutions to the committee.

Intervening in the discussion during private member resolution moved by the Leader of Opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar, and deputy opposition leader, Mr Francisco D’Souza, seeking to name the newly constructed district hospital at Mapusa after Dayanand Bandodkar, the Chief Minister said that the committee had already taken a decision to name the Goa Engineering College after him, even as he added that fresh proposals could be sent to the committee which would decide on the issue. The resolution was withdrawn following the statement made by the Chief Minister.

Another resolution seeking to ban the use of mobiles in schools and higher secondary schools, moved by Mr Damodar Naik, of the BJP, was also withdrawn after the Education Minister, Mr Atanasio Monserrate told Mr Naik to bring a private member bill to that effect. Mr Monserrate also informed the House that the government had already issued a circular in January last year preventing use of mobiles in schools.

Mr Naik told the House that mobile phones were being misused by students and teachers during school hours and were cause of nuisance and distraction to the students.

He also said that mobile phones were also being supplied by outsiders with ulterior motives and that their entry in schools should be banned.

The resolution moved by the Mayem MLA, Mr Anant Shet urging the government to bring amendment to the Goa, Daman and Diu Administration of Evacuee Property (amendment) Act to make Mundkar Protection Act applicable to evacuee property, was withdrawn after the Home Minister, Mr Ravi Naik agreed to make corrections in form I and XIV so as to correct the wrong entries wherein government has been shown as owner of evacuee properties.

Another resolution urging the government to set up independent power sub-station in Mandrem constituency, by Mr Laxmikant Parsekar, was also withdrawn after the Power Minister, Mr Aleixo Sequeira, assured to take corrective steps, if necessary. Yet another resolution seeking to urge the government to widen the Shivnathi road and remove all the bottlenecks in Shiroda constituency, by Mr Mahadev Naik, was also withdrawn after the Public Works Department Minister, told Mr Naik that he would take necessary steps to widen the road
