Loutolim suicide attempt: woman dies in Chennai

MARGAO: The 28-year-old female from Loutolim, Nadia Torreado, who had allegedly attempted suicide some 15 days back, died on Saturday night in a Chennai hospital where she was undergoing treatment.

The Maina Curtorim police team headed by PSI Suraj Samant is presently in Chennai. It is learnt that the Chennai police have referred the body for post mortem and police are now awaiting the autopsy report. Sources in Maina Curtorim police station informed on Sunday that police team had left for Chennai on Thursday in connection with the investigation of the case of suicide attempt by the woman.
Sources informed that the woman died while undergoing treatment, however, the police refused to give further details about her death. It may be recalled that the Maina Curtorim police had registered a case against the woman for an attempt to commit suicide under Section 309 of the IPC. The case was registered on Tuesday (May 18) night by PI, Mr Sidhant Shirodkar. The deceased woman was reportedly a close friend of a high profile politician from South Goa.
On hearing the news of Nadia’s death, women activists demanded that the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat hold an inquiry and make the report public within two days and have threatened to make this an issue if no action is taken.
They also threatened to gather all the papers through RTI and write to the National Human Rights Commission and National Women’s Commission in Delhi.
Holding a press conference in Margao on Sunday, the activists have alleged that this was a case of murder as no
proper care was taken and she was being shifted from one hospital to another.
“From Hospicio she was shifted to Apollo and from Apollo to Thane and from there to Chennai. This was to hide something,” Ms Tara Kerkar told assembled media on Sunday.  She also said that this was “atyachar” on women.
“The case was transferred from Margao to Sanguem. Can’t make out who is behind this,” she said, inferring that some heavyweight politician was behind this to protect people involved. She also alleged, referring to the girl’s statement, that one throws the toothpaste out and does not swallow it.
Earlier, while in the Thane hospital, a Special Executive Magistrate had recorded her statement where she had said that she had “consumed Ratol mistaking it for toothpaste.” Records at Apollo Victor Hospital in Margao, where she was earlier admitted, reveal that
she had consumed the entire tube of Ratol (rat poison).
Initially, the case was handled by Maina Curtorim PI, Mr Sidhant Shirodkar who had filed the complaint. The case was later handed over to Sanguem PI, Mr Raju Raut Desai.  Police sources say that as the complainant cannot be the investigating officer, this had to be done.
