VASCO: The aquatic life in the Vaddem Lake has been badly affected due to the improper sanitation and contamination of the lake water, due to the sewage that has found its way into the lake.
The people residing in the vicinity of Vaddem lake were surprised when on Wednesday morning, fish could be seen swimming near the surface and not going down into the deep end of the lake. Mr Gregorio Fernandes, a resident of Mundvel, Vaddem, informed that he was shocked to see the fish coming to the surface at around 8 a.m. on Wednesday. He is of the opinion that this phenomenon has occurred due to sewage that has been released into the lake from the nearby residential buildings.
He also informed that a strong foul stench was coming from the lake, and wondered what the bottom of the lake held in store.
The Revenue Minister, Mr Jose Philip D’Souza inspected the Vaddem lake, when several complaints were made to him by the residents in the locality. He was accompanied by the chief officer of the Mormugao Municipal Council, Mr Gopal Parsenkar and other municipal engineers.
Mr D’Souza made note of the dead fish that was seen floating in the water.
Mr D’Souza has directed the municipal authorities and the health authorities to initiate immediate action against the people who are responsible for any illegalities and further asked to collect the water samples of the Vaddem lake for examination and testing, so as to get to the cause of death of the fish.
Dr Vikas Cuelkar, the health officer of the Urban Health Centre, stated that he would collect the water samples on Thursday, and would sent the same for examination and
analysis.
Dr Cuelkar has also disclosed that the Urban Health Centre will immediately put some medicinal powder into the water, in order to avoid any danger to aquatic life in the Vaddem lake.
