PANAJI: The Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat on Monday said that the government would work out some method to extend assistance to the family of the Goan pilot, Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu, who died in a tragic on-duty accident while flying Indian Air Force MIG-27 aircraft, near Hashimara in West Bengal, last month, while the Sports Minister,
Mr Manohar Ajgaonkar stated that the iconic Indian cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar would be felicitated by the state government for his historical 200 not out inning against South Africa, in February 2010.
The announcements came on the first day of the assembly session, during related obituary reference and congratulatory motion, respectively.
The Sports Minister also informed that the education department will soon issue a notification for implementing the provision of the Goa Sports Policy, which provides marks to the sportsmen-students under the sports category, as well as grant them some relaxation in the examinations.
Earlier, former MLAs of the assembly of Goa, Daman and Diu namely, Shantaram Kambli (nominated), Urminda Lima Leitao (Mormugao) and Maruti Kamulkar (Mandrem), who departed in the recent past were paid rich tributes by the House.
The state assembly also condoled the death of the editor-in-chief of the Vishwacharitrakosh, the Marathi Encyclopaedia of World Biography - Shriram Kamat; the noted Konkani playwright and stage director, Prakash Thali; father of modern Konkani music, Wilfred Rebimbus; ‘Dnyanpeeth’ award winner and renowned poet, Vinda Karandikar; Wing Commander Oswald de Abreu; and chairman of Sangeet Natak Academy, Ram Niwas Mirdha.
Those who spoke on the orbituary references and condolence motions included Mr Digambar Kamat, Mr Manohar Parrikar, Mr Laxmikant Parsekar, Mr Francis D’Souza, Mr Dayanand Narvekar, Mr Vijay Pai Khot, Mr Ramkrishna Dhavalikar, Mr Aleixo Sequeira, Mr Anant Shet, Mr Mahadev Naik, Mr Nilkanth Halarnkar and Ms Victoria Fernandes. A two–minute silence was observed in memory of the departed souls.
The House also passed a congratulatory motion for the members of the Rajya Sabha for passing the Women’s Reservation Bill by amending the Constitution. Some other congratulatory motions applauded the ace cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar for his new ODI record; Dr Maria Aurora Couto and Fr Romualdo D’Souza for receiving Padma Shree awards; Jess Fernandes for winning Sahitya Akademy award; Mukesh Thali and Vishnu Wagh for receiving Kala Academy literary awards and Dr Anil Kakodkar for being bestowed upon with the first Gomant Vibhushan Award.
The House also lauded ‘Abhivyakti’, a city-based cultural organisation for winning a prize to its entry at the Sanskrit drama competition, recently held in Maharashtra, and Dr Kasturi Desai for winning Sahitya Akademi’s translation award.
Mr Digambar Kamat, Mr Manohar Parrikar and Mr Dayanand Narvekar were among those who spoke on the congratulatory motions.
