PANAJI: The downslide of the Goa University, which saw the university being recently accorded B Grade by the National Assessment Accreditation Council, has been seriously viewed by the government, and an explanation sought from the GU in this respect.
The secretary for education, Dr M Modassir has written a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr Digambar Kamat drawing his attention to the issue. “The NAAC carried out evaluation of various colleges in the state as well as of the Goa University and accorded B Grade to the only university in the state, while the Dhempe College of Arts and Science has secured A Grade,” the letter observed.
The government is annually bearing an expenditure of Rs 15 crore spent on the Goa University and with around 700 students studying at the university the government is spending approximately Rs 2.15 lakh on each of them. The letter to the Chief Minister, it is learnt, has said that the government should not tolerate such performance from the GU. Through the letter, the secretary for education has further suggested some measures for improvement of the Goa University working.
Meanwhile, the state government has decided to shelve its project as regards setting up of a convention centre on the GU land on the Dona Paula plateau. “The government will soon hand over the said land to the Goa University,” said a senior government official. “We would now be constructing the convention centre at some other location,” he noted.
