Eight cars valued at Rs 1 cr recovered

PANAJI:  Police have managed to recover eight cars out of nine expensive cars worth Rs 1 crore, which were stolen and allegedly sold to customers by forging documents, this information was revealed by the police inspector, Mr Sandesh Chodankar while speaking to media persons.

The PI said that although they had arrested two persons, Santosh Gaonkar and Govinda Lamani a few days back, the main accused, Mukund Gondhale and Robin Alexander were still at large.
The PI further informed that after a complaint was lodged in this regard by Mr Laxman Godkar that his rented vehicles were not yet returned a team comprising of head constables, Mr Ulhas Khot, Mr D K Naik, police constables, Mr Sriram Salgaonkar, Mr Chandrashekhar Amonkar, Mr Vijay Palani, Mr Girish Rahul and home guards, Mr Rayu Kanta Mandrenkar, Mr Prakash Polekar, besides police sub-inspector, Mr Vijay Chodankar swung into action and arrested two members of a gang involved in theft of hired cars.
Police have recovered 4 Maruti WagonRs, 2 Toyota Innovas, 1 Maruti Dezzire Swift and 1 Mahindra Scorpio.
The gang used to take vehicles on rent from private parties and pay them certain amount as first installment and then change the ownership of the vehicle by forging documents and then sell the vehicle to third party, he informed.
The case has been registered under Sections 406, 420, 468, 471 and 120(b) for criminal conspiracy.
On Wednesday morning the sister of the main accused, Gondhale approached the police inspector with a letter revealing details right from the modus operandi adopted by the accused to the motive behind the thefts.
Meanwhile, the remand of the accused has been extended for five days for further investigation.
