It is an established fact that there is a very strong involvement of police and politicians in the narcotics business which is rampant in Goa. No ship can be anchored on an unsafe harbour.
Without the help of the police to the drug peddlers, without the help of the politicians to the police, the narcotics business could not have grown to this extent in Goa.
Earlier also there were cases, which came to light and there were attempts to hush-up the cases saying that the substance seized was not the drug but only a medicine called ‘paracetamol’ and ‘fertilizer’ called urea.
I do not know as to where the matter of investigation stands now. Peoples’ memory is short and the administration very well knows that the public reaction is like soda water that gives a fizz for only a short time. It is a pity that those people who are expected to look into the interest of the people, interest of our own younger generation, are involved in such a disastrous trade without giving a thought about what would happen to their children, grand children, if they are taken to drugs and become drug edicts.
The media has to play a very important role in this matter. In the latest episode of Atala, it is found that media is also trying to conceal some facts about influential people, politicians, ministers and police, for the reasons best known to them. To cite an example; almost all news papers, on May 29, 2010 printed a news about the senior politician who opposed the probe, which otherwise should have been given to CBI. It was also reported ‘majority of the officials present at the meeting agreed to this, but a few politicians objected.
A senior politician, displeased with the recommendation, walked out of the meeting in a huff. With this act itself it is established that the officials who opposed the probe by CBI, have a vested interest in preventing the CBI probe. Now what prevented the media to publish the names of those officials, politicians, name of the son of the powerful politician said to be involved in the infamous Atala scandal? Who is that powerful politician who is becoming hurdle in calling the girlfriend of Atala to India to prove the strong relation between Atala, police and the powerful politician?
Many scandals, not only in India, but also all over the world, have come to light only from the cameras and pens of the brave reporters and media persons.
It is time for the Goans to become alert, lest we will have to find our children, grand children in the shacks of Atalas and Dudus instead of schools and colleges.
