PANAJI: Altogether 11 schools around Goa were handed over 23 computer sets on Tuesday under the matching grant scheme of the Rotary Club, at a special city function.
A fund of Rs 5.50 lakh was spent on this project spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Panaji.
The district Governor of the Rotary Club, Mr Gurudatt Bhakta, who was the chief guest for the event, said that Rotary has always done things on its own, not because it has lack of confidence in others, but has more confidence in itself.
Stating that ‘Service above Self’ is the motto of the international organisation, he hoped that the 23 computers presented to the schools would help in making the students of these institutions e-literate.
“Rotary has undertaken activities ranging from pulse polio campaign to eye donation/ corneal transplant and providing sewing machines to Jaipur feet to the needy,” Mr Bhakta informed.
The president of the Rotary Club of Panaji, Mr Sanat Pilgaokar, the immediate past district Governor, Dr Praneesh Jagirdar and Mr Durgesh Harite as well as Dr Shridhar Shetty of Rotary Club of Belgaum were also present on the occasion.
Educational institutions namely Manguirish Vidyalaya, Colvale; Damodar Vidyalaya, Lolyem; Azagao; Union High School, Azagao; St Mary’s Convent High School, Mapusa; SFX High School, Mapusa; Progress High School, Panaji; Betacao Life Centre, St Cruz; El Shaddai Charitable Trust, Azagao; Nirakar High School, Canacona; Mushtifund Middle School, Panaji; and Pragati High School, Verem were the beneficiaries of the project.
The project co-ordinator, Mr Gaurish Dhond in his introductory remarks said that Mr Spencer Mariotte of the Rotary Club (North Bay district, Canada) as well as the Rotary Club of Belgaum had played important roles in this matching grant project.
“We invited applications from desiring schools and our committee later visited them to select the beneficiaries,” he added.
It was also informed that an animal shelter set up by the Rotary Club of Panaji, at St Inez would be inaugurated on May 26.
