Navelim survive close contest to enter final

Betalbatim: Navelim Villagers Union entered the final of late Joao Francisco/Luiza Pacheco Cup football tournament by defeating Betalbatim Sporting Club 2-1 in the semis played at panchayat grounds, Betalbatim on Sunday.

It was Betalbatim that shot into the lead in 38th minute of play when Alric D’Cunha shot past the bewildered Navelim Villagers Union keeper Selvyn Gomes off a pass from play-maker Dylon Rodrigues.

But then, Betalbatim Sporting Club began to crack under pressure from Navelim forwards with their defence being in six and sevens as the match progressed.

Navelim suddenly began to stitch some good moves and levelled the score through Jaison Martins who collected a neat pass from Climax Lawrence and bulged the nets to beat Betalbatim keeper Micky in the 52nd minute.

Navelim thereafter went into top gear and found the match winning goal through Travis Gomes whose powerful shot crashed to the far corner of Betalbatim nets.
