Navelim Sporting Club rode on a fine brace by Clinton Niasso to outwit Cuncolim Union 3-1 and enter the quarterfinals of Curtorim Villagers Cup football tournament being played at Curtorim grounds, on Tuesday.
Jaison Martins scored the other goal for Navelim SC while Rosario Carvalho netted the lone goal for Cuncolim Union.
Navelim SC’s Clinton found the mark in the 23rd and 46th minute while Jaison struck in the 70th minute. Cuncolim Union’s only goal came in the add-on time of 70+1 minute, just before the referee could blow the final whistle.
Navelim SC, who dominated the proceedings in both the sessions, shot into the lead midway into the first session as Clinton, after receiving a neat assist from Darren Peixote, bulged the nets with an angular effort that beat the rival keeper Vicky Naik.
The second session saw Navelim Villagers improve their game by few notches and it was once again Clinton who was in the thick of action as he completed his brace off a pass from Darren Peixote, whose slicing pass beat the entire Cuncolim Union defence. The defence of Navelim SC was ably managed by Fr Americo Rodrigues, Joseph Gomes and others who hardly gave any room for Cuncolim Union defenders to maneuver into the box.
Navelim Sporting scored their third goal through Jaison Martins who sent the ball to the back of the rival net after receiving a neat assist from Climax Lawrence.
And just when the referee was about to blow the final whistle, Cuncolim Union pulled a goal back through Rosario Carvalho off a Sangam Gaoncar-pass.
