NSS unit of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem in association with Primary Health Centre, Quepem and Lions Club of Alem de Margao organised various activities as part of the National Science Day celebrations. Vice principal of the college, Shirish Kamat welcomed the gathering and explained the importance of National Science Day celebrations. NSS coordinator, R G Kulkarni presented the theme of the programme and explained the importance of NSS in promoting the same. The topics of the day were adolescence health issues, care for the elderly and Swachh Bharat Mission with free distribution of paper bags made by NSS volunteers.
Medical officer, Joyce Barretto explained the needs of old people, physiological and psychological changes associated with old age such as dementia, diabetes, arthritis, depression, hallucinations, etc, and concluded with duties and responsibilities of the yuth towards the elderly. Chief guest and key note speaker was ex deputy director, health services, Government of Goa and consultant for adolescence, Vasudev Dewari.
Dewari elaborated on the various issues related to adolescence such as social and health related problems. While discussing psychological and emotional aspects on adolescence Dewari narrated various reasons for suicidal tendency in teenagers and urged the youth to realise the importance of life and aspirations of parents and society towards them. He said there is a solution for every problem and asked the youth to speak to the councillors appointed in the college and health centre to overcome emotional failure. President, Lions Club, Sushma Vengurlekar explained the importance of cleanliness and plastic menace in society. Zonal chairperson, Lions Club, Rajani Raikar congratulated stake holders for making six and a half lakh paper bags and distributing them free of cost in the last five years in Quepem, Curchorem and Sanguem. The session was attended by 152 volunteers from commerce and arts streams.
