PANAJI: Issuing an ultimatum to legalise their services by July 27, North Goa Rent-a-Car Association (NGRCA) has threatened to disrupt monsoon session of state assembly and hold chakka jams across the state on that day.NGRCA general secretary Amir Shirodkar said that the operators are fed up and frustrated with the government’s dilly-dallying tactics. He said that the operators are being harassed by RTO and police for monetary gains. He also said that though they treat every foreigner equivalent to God under their ‘Atithi devo bhava’ pledge, customers are held hostage by RTO and police officials for hours as a result of which a bad image of the state is created and many do not visit again. This he said will kill tourism industry and one day no tourist will visit the state adding they will loose their only source of livelihood.
Shirodkar said that around 1,500 to 2,000 vehicles are involved in rent-a-car business till April 30, 2015 and demanded legalisation of all vehicles.
Addressing the agitators, former Calangute MLA Agnelo Fernandes said that the government should fulfill the demands and regularise services of rent-a-car operators as they are Goans. He said that some operators are in the business for ages. A heavy posse of policemen from Tiswadi sub-division office and Agaccaim police station were manning the Azad Maidan during the agitation.
