‘Mumbai-based hospital to assist in setting up SOTTO’

PANAJI: Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday said that the government will seek assistance from Mumbai-based KEM Hospital to set up State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which will enable Goa to create a registry of people requiring organ transplant.

“Since we don’t want to commit any error, the Health Secretary has been directed to speak to a specialist at the KEM Hospital, who is looking after SOTTO for them,” he added, observing that she would guide the Goa health department to put things in place so that the registry can start immediately. It may be recalled that the High Court of Bombay at Goa, last week, had directed the state and the central government to set up SOTTO in Goa within six months.

“We will recognise private hospitals under this programme and once things fall in place, the Goa Medical College and Hospital would be the seventh health institution in the country to have SOTTO facility,” Rane said.

The proposed SOTTO at the Goa Medical College and Hospital is expected to be linked to the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) West as well as National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

Furthermore, the Health Minister said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will soon start a crackdown on malls and big stores that do not follow food safety norms.

“FDA has already identified big stores and malls where food items are being sold even after their expiry,” he observed, pointing out that FDA would soon start crackdown on such major outlets.

The Health Minister was speaking to media after inaugurating a private hospital at Old Goa.
