Mount Mary’s High School, Chinchinim and St Rita’s High School, Maina-Curtorim entered the semifinals of St Joseph Vaz inter-school football tournament after chalking out wins in their respective matches, played at church grounds, Chinchinim on Wednesday.
Host Mount Mary’s HS carved out a convincing 3-1 win against St Thomas High School, Cansaulim to book their place in the semis. All the goals came in the second session of play. Mount Mary’s dominated the first half but could not find the mark due to brave goalkeeping by St Thomas High School keeper Nikhil K.
Mount Mary’s, who had more ball possession, came charging in every now and then in the first half to find the mark, but all their efforts went in vain as St Thomas HS keeper stood firm and brought in at least three spectacular saves.
St Thomas HS did come up with some counter forays which were ineffective as Mount Mary’s HS defence stood tall.
In the second session, Mount Mary’s HS mounted more pressure against their rivals with Preston Fernandes and Denson Fernandes combining superbly as they tore off the rival defence with swift moves, which saw St Thomas HS citadel crumbling.
It was during such good spell of ascendency that Mount Mary’s HS striker Denson Fernandes scored a brilliant brace while the other goal was scored by Askshay Kore.
St Thomas HS, Cansaulim pulled one goal back through Kenneth D’Costa.
In the other match of the day, St Rita’s High School, Maina-Curtorim defeated Assumpta Convent High School, Sarzora 2-0 to make it to semis.
Scoring once in each half of play, St Rita’s HS, who played a positional game, looked better side even though the Sarzora school did produce some sparkling moves, which fizzled out once they entered the rival box due to poor shooting abilities.
Riston Pereira provided the lead for St Rita’s HS when his elegant effort found the far corner of the nets. The second session was also dominated by St Rita’s HS lads who scored their second goal through Steward D’Mello in the 50th minute of play.
