Most VPs sharing border dumping waste in Margao: MMC

Margao: Around half of the panchayats in Salcete taluka are dumping their waste in the jurisdiction of the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) thereby hampering its garbage management system, MMC chairperson Babita Prabhudesai alleged on Thursday.

She said that the panchayats do not have a waste disposal system in place. Salcete has a total of 30 panchayats of which 11 are dumping their waste in MMC properties, the MMC chairperson said.

“Around 12 to 15 tonne waste from other areas is dumped in the border areas of Margao. The waste is all mixed in nature and stinks badly. We have no option but to collect it,” said Prabhudesai.

Asked to name the panchayats that dump their waste on the border areas of Margao, the chairperson said that all the panchayats that share border with Margao including Aquem- Baixo, Navelim, Davorlim-Dicarpale, Rumdamol, Benaulim are involved.

“In next two days, we will be writing again to the director of panchayats about the illegal act of these panchayats,” disclosed Prabhudesai after the media briefing held to lay emphasis on waste segregation.

Sources told this daily that a few panchayats have engaged contractors to lift waste. But they allegedly, in connivance with in-charge of waste collection, dump waster at MMC-owned waste dumping site or unload waste in the border areas of Margao.
