A double strike by Milagres Fernandes in the second session and a goal each by Joywin Carneiro and Veron Fernandes enabled Maina SC, Curtorim hammer United Boys of Dando-Colva 4-1 and enter the quarterfinals of 29th Super Soccer played at St John the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Thursday.
Maina SC scored through Joywin Carneiro in the 32nd min, Milagres Fernandes 42nd min and 65th min and Veron Fernandes 67th min.
United Boys pulled a goal back by Ronnie Fernandes (Balla) in the 50th minute.
Maina who led 1-0 at half time, went into the lead in the 32nd minute when striker Joywin Carneiro capitalised free kick to the far corner of United Boys of Dando-Colva team.
Though the first half was almost played on even terms, during which United Boys had a few chances to find the mark, but their strikers appeared to be goal shy and simply muffed off the opportunities that came their way.
Though the United Boys’ defense put up a brave front to quell the dangerous forays of Maina, their citadel fell following a free kick as Joywin was fouled while penetrating into the box on the left flank. The resultant free kick, almost at the end of the first session, saw Joywin Carneiro curling the shot to the far corner of the rival nets to take the lead.
The second session saw Maina having a complete say in the proceedings during which time, they continued to score, keeping the United Boys’ defense napping as they went on to find the mark.
Seven minutes into the second session, Maina’s Milagres Fernandes bulged the nets after he received a through pass from the right flank. Milagres dodged two rival defenders before scoring.
United Boys suddenly retaliated and after initiating a good move from the middle, Conrad Fernandes passed the ball to Ronnie Fernandes who lost no time in sending it past the bewildered Maina keeper Johnson Bhagat, 2-1.
The match then completely tilted in favour of the Maina team.
Milagres Fernandes of the Maina team then completed his brace as he ran solo in the 65th minute and outwitted rival keeper Minguel Fernandes with a superb shot.
The United Boys defense were seen struggling to contain Maina strikers and it was during this spell of Maina that saw substitute Veron Fernandes finding the mark just three minutes from the final hooter to score the team’s fourth goal.
