The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) on Monday completed the work of dismantling tin sheets of the barricades on the pavement of the Captain of Ports (CoP) building up to the reception centre of the Big Daddy (Maharaja) Casino adjacent to the Dayanand Bandodkar Road near the Old Secretariat.
The GSIDC had started removing the barricades on June 1 after Congress workers had staged a morcha at the jetty on May 30 demanding that the pavement be cleared for the use of general public.
The barricades were put up some six years back while undertaking the first phase of the construction of the jetty however they were not removed as GSIDC was supposed to undertake the second phase of the construction of the jetty soon which has been delayed on more than one occasion.
The Congress workers had also demanded that the Corporation of the City of Panaji remove the illegal encroachment by the casino operators, who have illegally occupied the pavement and set up their reception centre and in addition to that, they built a toilet adjacent to the pavement without obtaining the necessary permission from the corporation.
CCP Commissioner Ajit Roy claimed that after the action by GSIDC the casino operator is removing the illegal encroachments from the pavement on his own and the corporation will wait for a day and if the erected illegal structures and banners are not removed then CCP would go ahead and get the pavement cleared.
