Marna-Siolim march into final

St Anthony’s SC, Marna-Siolim marched into the finals of the 42nd Cana-Benaulim Soccer Tournament after registering a 3-1 victory against St Anthony’s SC, Colva in the semifinals played at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Wednesday.

Siddhant Shirodkar (10th minute), Claudio Rodrigues (15th minute) and Pushparaj Mandrekar (67th minute) scored for the Marna-Siolim team, while Colva side pulled a goal back scored by Francis Pawaskar (40th minute).

Playing to their best form, Marna-Siolim team dominated the proceedings in both the sessions as their defence hardly faltered while their half-line too worked to perfection to feed the strikers.

On the other hand, the defence of Colva team looked porous and the midfield which was almost disorganised looked lethargic in either sessions. As a result of it the Colva team was seen being at the receiving end when Siolim strikers came charging at them.

Marna-Siolim went into the lead when attacking medio Anselmo D’Souza split the rival defence with his quick footwork and on seeing an unmarked Siddhant Shirodkar passed the ball to him, and the last named netted it in style to beat the Colva keeper Minguel Fernandes.

Within the next five minutes, Marna-Siolim buttressed their lead as Claudio Rodrigues bulged the rival nets after he received a defence-splitting pass from Servilo Lobo.

In the second session, within two minutes of resumption Colva team pulled a goal back as Francis Pawaskar, after collecting a neat pass from Baptist Fernandes, slammed the ball in that was beyond the reach of Siolim keeper Samresh Phadte.

Marna-Siolim thereafter regrouped well and after some nice probing scored their third goal from the boots of Pushparaj Mandrekar off a pass from Sidhant Shirodkar.

St Anthony’s SC, Marna-Siolim will meet Sporting Club of Davorlim in the
finals to be played on August 12.
