Margao Municipal Council (MMC), during a special meeting held on Tuesday, has decided to hire a new contractor for garbage collection from wards one to seven and also re-tender work for the multi-level car parking project in Margao.

MMC chairperson Babita Prabhudessai, while speaking to media persons after the meeting, said that a decision was taken to allow a local contractor to take over the garbage collection work. “The services of the erstwhile contractor were terminated and we have decided to engage a new contractor. In response to the tender, we received three bids – one each from bidders from Haryana, Bicholim, and Margao,” she said.

Several councillors said that people from their wards were uncomfortable with workers coming from outside the state, thus calling for a local contractor who could be held responsible and who could be easily contacted. A decision was also taken to undertake pest control for the municipal building that the chairperson said was needed since many of the files faced danger of getting destroyed by termites.

With the recent news that many buildings in the city were not compliant with the required fire safety norms, the municipality has also decided to undertake a fire audit for the municipal building by engaging the fire department and to take measures to ensure that the building has the required fire-fighting equipments installed.

The council also resolved to undertake the re-tendering of the multi-level car parking project since the previous contractor has backed out.

“The previous contractor had backed out as the rates were not feasible. When we contacted the second bidder, he also turned down saying the rates were not feasible. Therefore, we have decided to issue fresh tenders for the project,” said Prabhudessai while addressing the council meeting.

Councillors demanded that the civic body speed up the process of issuing the tender as the work of building the multi-car parking project was lingering on for over three years now.
