The representatives of seven Margao schools, on Friday, appealed to the state government and the people of Davorlim to resolve the issue of the land amicably so that it can be utilised for the purpose of having an educational hub.

People of  Davorlim are opposing the proposed  educational hub in their village stating that  there is no scope for having the required  infrastructure.

Responding to the opposition, the Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had said that  “the land belongs to  the government, and if the people of Davorlim have infrastructure problem, they should meet me.”

The land  admeasuring 1.5 lakh square metres  was  acquired in 2008 from the Davorlim Communidade  for multi-purpose utility.

After completing the acquisition process in 2010, the land was handed over to the education department by the District Collector in December 2016 for the purpose of having an educational hub.

“We have collectively written to the government earlier about the need for shifting the Margao schools to  put an end to the traffic congestions.  On  Thursday, we submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on it. We appeal to the people of  Davorlim and  the state government to resolve the issue amicably and permit the  construction of educational hub at Davorlim. This is an educational project, which should not be mixed  with  politics,’’ said  Sudin Naik, the president of Samaj Seva Sangh, one of the organisations, which runs schools in Margao.

When asked whether the educational institutions will hand over the old (existing) school structures to the government, there wasn’t any positive response as the  Panaji schools also haven’t handed over the structures.

Naik and a couple of others also posed a question to the media: “Aren’t Davorlim children schooling in Margao?”

“We would prefer Davorlim or a suitable place,” said Naik when a reporter asked whether they are only pressing for the Davorlim land.

The people of  Davorlim are up in arms against the  educational hub project claiming that the land should be used for the benefit of the locals only.

They said that as per the court directives, the land is to be used only for the purposed it was acquired for and that too within a specific time period.
