Chief officer of Margao Municipal Council (MMC) Siddhivinayak Naik on Friday said that more time will be given to tax evaders who were warned that establishments would be sealed if dues were not cleared.
Naik had warned of sealing of businesses in the Osia Complex and adjacent three buildings, including banks and financial institutions, within 48 hours for failing to produce necessary documents like trade licences, agreements and tax evasions, during a surprise visit.
He said that “50 per cent of those, who were issued notices, visited the MMC and promised to pay the dues.” “Hence, I have given them some more time to clear the dues. The others will face action,” Naik added.
According to the chief officer, the tax arrears of the above mentioned is to the tune of Rs 3 crore and for decades the tax has been defaulted on.
When asked why action was not taken in that regard for so long, the chief officer, who was addressing the media along with chairperson Babita Prabhudesai, said that an explanation will be sought from the concerned staff. “The council is serious in raking in revenue. We are ready to simplify the process for the traders. The chief officer has cleared hundreds of trade licences within a short span of time,” she said, appealing to businessmen, banks, financial institutions to pay the dues.
