MAJORDA: Maina SC edged past Betalbatim SC by a solitary goal and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 18th Fr Basilio Andrade Memorial football tournament at Musson grounds, Majorda on Tuesday.
The all-important goal for the Maina SC came off in the 10th minute as Nelister Silveira after receiving a neat pass from Milagres Fernandes smartly tapped the ball in past the bewildered Betalbatim SC keeper Micky Antao.
Betalbatim thereafter wore some good moves with medio Travis Barretto and Bosco Lopes being in the thick of action for most part of the play.
Betalbatim came very close to level the score when Travis sent a through-pass to striker Austin Fernandes, whose angular effort was smartly collected by Maina SC keeper Johnson Bhaghat.
Maina keeper Micky Antao, who had a busy time under the bar, stood firm in both the sessions of play even as Betalbatim strikers in Bernado Rodrigues, Austin and medios Travis and Bosco came charging in for most part of the play. But their shots either went off the mark or were collected by Maina SC keeper Johnson Bhagat.
In the second session, Maina SC had two glorious chances to buttress their lead but Nester and Velson Fernandes were found wanting. Nester on two occasions shot towards the rival goal but the ball missed the mark narrowly.
In the last few minutes of play, Betalbatim SC tried some long rangers to try and level the score but all their efforts proved futile.
