Low IQ has made me way more famous than me being an actress: Alia Bhatt

Film actress Alia Bhatt who was down in Goa to participate in a discussion at the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) spoke about how she at a young age could escalade the ladder of success in her acting career and what hardships she faced through her life. NT BUZZ details more

Always being questioned about her low intelligence quotient (IQ) level, Alia Bhatt openly agreed at a discussion held in Kala Academy that it does not really matter to her whether people laugh or make jokes and troll her; she is fine as long as people are laughing. She says: “Not having IQ has made me way more famous than me being an actress has. But I really think it’s fine as long as people are smiling.”

She then shared an incident that happened to her while travelling to Singapore, where she was stopped by the security forces. “I was wondering why they stopped me. I thought may be because I was an actress and they watched my film, but said ‘Ma’am we love your jokes.’ And I was like ‘Okay that’s nice’. It was awkward but I was glad with the fact that someone’s happy and laughing because of me,” said Alia.

To get a sneak peek into who the real Alia is, she was asked to describe her personality; she answered confidently that she is a girl with multiple personalities and enjoys being herself, no matter if it is onscreen and off-screen. She said: “It is true that I have multiple personalities. It is not just one or two but I have at least seven types of personalities and the people close to me know it. I am completely moody and sometimes I am sweet. I have a different personality when I meet people for the first time; I have another personality when I am with my friends and when I want to enjoy life-  ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ personality and the serious type of personality.” She said that she could switch three personalities in a matter of just ten minutes.

Alia also mentioned that she does not allow positive appreciation and comments to overrule her confidence as she thinks that being overconfident can doom her career. She firmly follows the saying ‘Keep your head on your shoulders’, for she believes it is important to achieve success in life.

It is not the first time that Alia has come to Goa; she has been to Goa  previously and has also shot a film ‘Dear Zindagi’ alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Sharing her Goa experience, she said: “I am always happy to be in Goa. It is a lovely place. It’s nice that IFFI is located here. One of the best memories I had in Goa was shooting ‘Dear Zindagi’ on Goa’s beaches with Shah Rukh Khan.” At the request of a delegate Alia also tried speaking in Konkani. She said ‘Dev Borem Korum’ which means ‘God bless you’ in Konkani.

Recently, Alia had tweeted about the ‘Padmavati’ controversy saying: “This is what happens when violent threats are allowed to make openly without punishment. What is happening? Shocked.” Taking a stand on the same, she said: “I don’t think that me evolving as an actor has anything to do with it. A lot has been said in regards to the topic. It is about responding to the film in general. In a democracy, if you have the right to opinion then I have the right to expression. Let the film release, let the official body give their certificate and let the audience decide.”

For Alia the audience is the king, who decides what is bad and good, like when her film ‘Shaandaar’ did not do well, she genuinely accepted that and regarded people’s feedback on a positive note.

Speaking about her role in the film ‘Highway’ Alia spoke about how she moved out of her comfort zone to give her best for the character of ‘Veera Tripathi’. She said: “Imtiaz Ali is a kind of director who tries to bring out the hidden you. He was the one who worked to bring out the best in me. The character was very intense and different but with Imtiaz’s guidance I was able to do justice to the role. I pushed myself and tried bringing out the best in me.”

Giving a slight hint that Imtiaz is yet to work with her on another film, she said: “Imtiaz keeps saying to me I am still not done with and I am eagerly waiting when he will be done with me.” Alia also showcased her singing skills by singing ‘Main Tenu Samjhawan ki’ song to a delightful audience.

As an actor Alia does not want to put limitations on the roles she chooses, she will happily welcome what comes her way. She wishes to try all kinds of roles except horror roles, because she says she is terrified of such films. Describing what parameters she considers while choosing a film she said: “Out of the many scripts that come to me for reading, I prefer to choose the one that has a story that touches my heart. After which, I will make a point to meet all the directors and see through them what are the kind of role they are actually looking out for.”

Alia who also started ‘Coexist’ a platform that highlights and works towards the issues of animal and ecological welfare, speaking about it she says that she loves animals and wishes to do something for them; if given a chance she also wishes to start a similar initiative in Goa.
