FC Goa rope in Nirmal Chhetri

PANAJI: FC Goa on Thursday announced the signing of Sikkimese defender Nirmal Chhetri, who has been a veteran in the Indian Super League since its inception. Nirmal has played for two clubs – Kerala Blasters FC (2014) and NorthEast United FC (2016 and 2017) — before joining the Gaurs ahead of the 2018-2019 season. “The entire country noticed the brand of exciting football that FC Goa played last season and now I have the chance to be a part of it. Coach Sergio (Lobera) did wonders last season and I’m happy to be under his tutelage going forward,” Nirmal was quoted as saying in a press release issued by the club.

Niraj Saripalli wins senior chess championship

CURCHOREM: Niraj Saripalli of Salcete taluka clinched the Goa State Open FIDE Rating Senior Chess Championship 2018, as he remained unbeaten throughout the tournament and collected eight points from nine rounds. Niraj was held by CM Leon Mendonca and Devesh Naik in the 7th and 8th round respectively, but in the 9th and decisive round he defeated Reuben Colaco to score 8 points from 9 rounds. Ritviz Parab, who was earlier beaten by Niraj Saripalli in the 6th round, made a comeback by beating Anirudh Parsekar in the last round to finish with 8 points. But he had to settle for runner-up position due to his difference in tiebreak. Devesh Anand Naik finished second runner-up while Leon Mendonca beat finished 4th. All the top four players have thus qualified to represent Goa state for chess nationals to be held in Maharashtra in December.

Guirdolim SC advance to quarters

ASSOLDA: Guirdolim SC entered the quarterfinals of 10th All Goa St Anthony’s Festival Cup football tournament defeating Sporting Club of Davorlim 10-9 on penalty shootout at panchayat grounds, Assolda on Thursday. The teams played a 3-3 draw during the regulation time. While Guirdolim scored through Myron Fernandes, Mario Noronha and R D’Sa, Sporting Club of Davorlim found the mark through Clifton Rebello, Jomark Colaco and Rosfern Miranda. In the ensuing tie-breaker which was further stretched to sudden death, Guirdolim SC proved to be better shooters as they won the match by 10-9 goals.
