Baptist strike sends St Anthony’s Colva into final

BENAULIM: A second-half strike from Baptist Fernandes facilitated St Anthony’s SC, Colva’s entry into the final of Cana-Benaulim Panchayat Cup football tournament, as they defeated Parish Youth, Nuvem by a solitary goal in the semifinal played at St John, the Baptist grounds, Benaulim on Tuesday. The match winning goal for the Colva side came off after their hard-working midfielder Keith Rodrigues sent a defence-splitting pass to Baptist, whose power-packed effort gave no chance at all to the PY Nuvem keeper Jose Colaco. St Anthony’s SC will meet Varca SC in the finals slated for June 17.

UZO advance to semis

CANDOLIM: UZO edged past Saipem SC 2-1 to book their place in the semifinals of Friends Circle Soccer Cup 2018, at Dr Gustavo grounds, Candolim, on Tuesday. Trevor Antao drew the first blood for UZO as he scored off a header after receiving a cross from Francis Fernandes. Trevor then in the 37th minute netted his brace as he let his power-packed right footer hit the back of Saipem’s nets. Saipem reduced the deficit through Rohan Morajkar who scored off a cross from Albern Cardozo perfect cross.

Leon wins chess gold in Russia

PANAJI: CM Leon Luke Mendonca (2228) of Goa clinched gold at the 49th edition of the International Schools Team Chess Championship held in Sochi, Russia recently. He was also awarded an additional gold medal as board prize for winning all his nine games, mentions the press release sent by Carol Mascarenhas. His other team members included Gukesh D, Rakshitta Ravi and Savitha Shree, all from Vellamal Vidyalaya School, Chennai. They were the only team selected to represent the country, adds the press release.
